Coastal Vacations Archives

My in-laws live in Anne Arbor, so that area MIGHT be where we will move soon (I keep eyeballing Saline, since it recently got on the 100 top places to live list). I really don’t know anything about MI, and have no clue as to if I’ll like it there. Can you tell me what its like?

I am a Northwest girl, and have always lived in Oregon and WA near a river or the ocean. From the deep forest trails of the Olympic Peninsula, the tall Madronas, the misty coastal mornings, to the waterfalls of WA and Oregon (Columbia River, ahh… so nice.)
I really don’t know anything about MI, except it is often a vacation destination for people due to the lakes.
Will a NW’er feel "at home" in MI? I feel like I’m going to be really homesick… I don’t know… what is it like there?
Commenter 1:
Pardon me, Ann Arbor.
Also, West Coast does not get Hurricanes. Thats ok though, I forgive you for also being stupid.
Ok looks like poster 1 was removed. Much thanks. :)

I’m hoping to go to Maine in June but unlike going a big destination city at visiting a state is leaving me unsure of how to plan a vacation. I don’t want to drive around aimlessly the entire time then feel like it was a waste, though I by no means want every day completely planned out…..

How do I plan a Coastal Maine vacation….Maine residents would be great to hear from….

..Oh we are coming from NYC…
but planning a trip to say Orlando is easy…you pick one hotel then plan activities….Maine you go up the coast and visit various places with different hotels….I don’t know what I can do with 4-5 days….where the best places to see whales and wildlife are…how far up the coast is reasonable to assume I could go from portland…

Looking for high end shopping, 5 star resort sort of vacation….but I don’t know Oregon at all. We’ve been to Lincoln City but it’s not what we’re looking for.

I’ve been to Barcelona and I loved it. But I always thought it might be more expensive there.
Carrusel, thank you for your advise that was actually very helpful! I am looking for more of a small town. The night life isn’t as important to me, but another think I enjoyed about Barcelona was that people came out for dinner so late. So I guess I want to be able to go out at night but not necessarily to a disco. I’d like to live in Europe one day, even if I have to wait until I retire there.

The reason of this question is because my gorgeous friend Jamie Ashley Corbin is planning to travel to Okinawa ( Japan ) to do scuba diving, her favourite hobby. Jamie also wants to celebrate her son’s Hamish homebirth with this vacation.
But Jamie is worried because she had heard that coastal waters around Okinawa are infested with highly venomous sea snakes. For this reason, she wants to know if SEA SNAKES ATTACK PEOPLE WITHOUT ANY PROVOCATION ?. WHAT TO DO IF A SEA SNAKE APPROACHS NEAR YOU ?.
This answers could help Jamie Ash. So thank you !

This was a clever book written in 1981 by author Joel Garreau, but it created connections between the countries of North America and connected my country with yours.

Nation 1) New England – Now Includes the Canadian Maritimes!

Nation 2) The Foundry – Now includes Toronto and Montreal in the same box as New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC, and the industrial cities where the industrial revolution first peaked

Nation 3) The Breadbasket – Includes Manitoba and part of Saskatchewan in with the US Midwestern states where fresh farms produce all kinds of wheat, corn, like the CWB would have a part of regulating.

Nation 4) Dixie – Okay okay okay this is the Southern USA, Canada and Mexico are both excluded from it.

Nation 5) Mexamerica – This ties the Southwest Arid Desert section of Arizona and New Mexico with the Mexican Continent and the spicy southwest thing, though there is a piece of BC that could fit with MexAmerica, the world’s smallest Desert on the way from Whitehorse to Carcross perhaps?

Nation 6) Ecotopia! – Very green and lush, Northern California, Oregon, Washington state, the sunshine coast of BC, coastal Alaska! IT’s soooooo pretty and eco-friendly

Nation 7 Quebec- Oh yes this is another great and speaks for itself. And like Dixie, this is very culturally exclusive, ONLY Canada here

Nation 8 Islands – Canadians have to love this one on vacations. South part of Florida and the Carribean Islands. Palm trees and tropical beaches.

Nation 9 – The Empty Quarter – This is where it takes 700 km to get from any Point A to Point B and it includes the West, with the exception fo the coast! Here you connect like Salt Lake City, Cheyenne, Wyoming; Great Falls, Montana; Calgary, Alberta; Edmonton; all of Upper Western Ontario; Churchill, MB, Yellowknife, Prince Albert; ALL FARRRRR stretches of emptiness.

The cultures of North America once fell into these 9 categories or more possibly, plus aberrations.

Do today’s Canadians think these NINE NAtions of North America are as relevant now?

Hi,
A group of our friends are planning to meet somewhere around Alexandria, Virginia and chill out for a weekend. Do any of u have any suggestions for a good place, preferably with nice cabins to relax. I can see a lot of coastal places around, but since I’ve never been there, I have no idea which place might be ideal. Any suggestions is really appreciated, Thanks.
Thanks for all ur suggestions, we’ve planned to rent a water front cabin in Annapolis and relax for a 3 – day weekend, if you all have any other suggestions, please pass it on. Thanks once again

well my family is looking for a small, coastal town to visit that is on the east coast and we can drive to from connecticut. (preferably no more than a 10 hour drive!). we went to maine and florida last year.
thanks!

Hey, i just had a quick question to throw out there. Me and about 4 or 5 of my friends were looking to go on a trip this summer for about a week or so and we were kinda wondering where…Were looking to stay in the US and right now we live in Jersey so our shore is obviosuly out…we were looking at mostly the eastern coastal states but im open to whatever you wanna throw out there. money isnt exactly NOT an issue but were kinda flexible, we dont wanna get tooo crazy financially. were just looking to have fun like any group of 19 year old kids would be. Beach, clubs, parties, just fun fun fun for a week…any help out there? thanks alot.

Last night I returned home from a weeklong vacation in Ocean City, Maryland, and this was the first time I have been there since I was an infant (last trip was in July 1991). The weather was awesome and I had a great time. While I was there, I made several pilgrimages to the famous Candy Kitchen shops–I stopped at 4 different spots (91st and Coastal, two boardwalk spots, and the one in Rehoboth Beach, DE). I sampled the delicious Peanut Butter Truffle fudge and immediately bought a pound (as well as half a pound of creamsicle and a half pound of King Tut), and my free pound was also PB Truffle (it’s pretty awesome!). Does anyone have a recipe for these three fudge flavors? I need recipes for Peanut Butter Truffle, Creamsicle, and King Tut fudges. Thanks in advance!

i’m 14 and i live in san francisco..i have almost all my life. my mom wants to move in about a year.

i’ve also wanted to move for a while…but to southern california. i’ve really liked it there for a while. and i visited a few cities in southern california recently for vacation. i LOVED it. it was so warm and pretty. then i came home to san francisco and it was raining. i felt like homesick. like i want to go back to socal SO bad.

anyway..the reason my mom wants to move is because its very expensive living here. and if she moved to a different state, she says she could have so much better quality of life. like a bigger house..etc.

she wants to move to a different state. she likes arizona. she visited it there.

but i want to stay in california. i want to go to southern california. i know socal is not the best place if my mom is thinking cheap!

HELP!! Are there any cities i could suggest to my mom in socal?

i want to live in a coastal city..but that’s not an option..right :(
and my mom pays almost ,000 per month for rent.
we visited LA. i loved it. my mom didn’t like it because of the traffic

My husband and I have a 30 foot (well, 29.6′) 1964 Columbia Defender in really good shape which we have had the greatest time sailing the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Puget Sound in Washington for the last 2 years. Now, my husband, a private in the Army, has been transferred to Hawaii and we are here now. Our beloved boat is sitting in dry dock in Washington and we are wondering how to get it here without having to declare bankruptcy in the process.

This brings me to the question I wish to post. Is it possible to have someone sail it here for us? Maybe stay on vacation here with us for awhile and we could buy a plane ticket for them back (if they want to go back).

I’ve heard conflicting stories about whether to sail this boat to Hawaii. I’ve heard it will make it fine if a good eye is kept on the weather and I’ve heard it’s a coastal boat and shouldn’t go to Hawaii. We’ve only been sailing a couple of years and in coastal waters so I would appreciate some advice from the more learned members here.

Thanks so much

my husband and i were looking at boat houses. are there any common problems with this type of investment for a home/vacation rental? mold, high maintinance, or anything? what should we be wary of? what kindof property taxes should we be paying? thinking of oregon coastal area…

My Fiance and I want to go on vacation We just are not sure where to go. I am a avid fisherman and she enjoys it as well so coastal and tropical is a plus but also do not want to be swarmed by tourist we enjoy more local spots. We do like to party and drink. The cost isnt an issue and we have 7 days avaliable in October. Any suggestions would be Great. at the moment we are thinking Hawaii just not sure what part I was thinking Kona
we live in Houston and again We are up for travel to any destination as long as its tropical and the food is good
any other suggestions

I will be going on vacation from January 11th-January 15th and have never been to the west coast. I am from georgia where it is in the 70’s. I know there is a lot of snow in oregon and roads close, but which of the coastal towns would be best to go to this time of year? Kind of a last minute vacation I’m trying to throw together. Info on the towns and activities there would be great. Will be getting a rental car from Portland, so driving isn’t an issue. Thanks in Advance

-From one coast to another…

I love to travel; to hop in a car & hit the open road; however, not all "touristy" spots are easily accessed. Tthere are high cliffs, steep roads, high-winding roads, floating bridges, etc.

Does anyone have a great reference for trip planning? I have looked at 3-D maps, and those give one a general idea, but not the complete details for particualr highways, etc.

I have tried to search for blogs on other’s road-trips to similiar destinations, but often the type of roads are not mentioned.

I hope to take a few family vacations & am looking at Mt. Rushmore, S. Dakota, Volcanic Nat’l Park Lassen CA, Crater Lake, Lake Tahoe Nevada, and coastal trips on Hwy 1 / 101 to name a few starters.

My partner (from Germany) at work approached me and asked me for some local input in planning his two week vacation to New York city. He wants to spend the first week in they city, and then drive somewhere within a 1/2 day’s drive to spend the second week in a rented house or possibly a bed and breakfast either on the coast near a beach or in/near a national park with beautiful wooded scenery. He has a 10 year old and a 14 year old and would like to go somewhere with ‘beautiful trees, a state park, or something along the ocean with water sports’. I think he was thinking of something along the tri-state area coastal front, but he also seems receptive to state parks in-state/up-state New York or New Jersey, especially if there’s stuff for his kids to do (hiking, outdoors/water sports, etc.) Beautiful scenery and keeping his kids happy seem to be the priorities. Please send any links of places that you think fit the bill.

All right i had to make a slogan for the Atlantic Coastal Plain of Florida and here it is " Not just vacationing, enjoying" what do you think?

My friends and I are looking to plan a short 4 night vacation for April 2009. We live in NJ and want to keep the driving to 7 hrs or less (we’re thinking of Canada, NH, VT, MA, PA, RI, etc. We’re 26 and would like to stay nearby some nightlife spots (bars/clubs), but also would like to do some scenic things during the day. It doesn’t have to be a coastal town, since it wouldn’t be warm enough to use the beach. We’ve already ruled out Boston & Hartford b/c 2 of us go there often for work. Any ideas? Thank you!!!

I just recently really wanted a Yorkie!! I looked online to see if there was any in San Antonio since I was headed that way anyways. Well I did find a Yorkie, her name was "Susie". I emailed the guy named "Karl", Told him I was very interested! He replied immediatly and said this,

I’m looking for the name of a thriller I saw while on vacation in Mexico a few years back. I’m thinking it took place in Nova Scotia or another coastal locale in Canada. The plot, or what I saw of it, goes something like this. The main family consists of a father, who is physically abusive, a helpless mother, two young boys and a son of about 18. It turns out the younger sons were fathered by the oldest, all of whom have extremely light blonde hair. Later, it turns out the father assaulted the actual parents of the oldest son when he was an infant, and his actual mother shows up in town looking for him. To hide him, the father buries the oldest son alive, but the two younger boys tell the police where he is, and he is saved. Later he becomes a police officer.
Sorry if my synopsis is a bit scatterbrained, but it is a really weird movie and it has been quite a few years since I saw it.

i mean coastal south carolina <3
i want to vacation there :)
