Personal statements for university application?
I’m applying for Pharmacy course at the University of Sunderland. I’m required to fill in a personal statement section and I’m stumped. Can someone please guide me on what to write about and how I should write it so that it is a good statement that will impress the people in charge of the applications and therefore making my chances of success higher? Thanks in advance! ^__^

Personal statements can be difficult to start. I must help two dozen students a year with their personal statements for medical school… Anyway, don’t feel badly about being stumped. It’s common.
Your personal statement should be about you. Think of it this way… You’re asking the University to agree to a lifetime relationship with you. …yes… lifetime. Once you graduate, you’ll always be an alum, so it’s a lifetime relationship.
So, if this were another person, what would they need and want to know about you in order to agree to say… marry you? You’d essentially want to tell them *EVERYTHING* about yourself, which of course… you can’t do. So instead, you’re looking for the things that *define* you… that have made you what you are today, regardless of whether they’re family, work, school, extracurricular activities, or unusual experiences.
As much as I hate admitting it… The movie "Spanglish" provides a great example of a personal statement. Rent it and watch if you haven’t… The young woman in the movie is the narrator, and the naration is all in the form of her personal statement for university admission. It’s really wonderful. …as you’d expect since it was written by a bunch of high priced writers in Hollywood, but I digress. Anyway, hers is really great, but yours doesn’t have to be anything like it of course.
Just help them to get to know you. That’s what they want and need. Good luck!
Talk about:
1) Why you want to become a Pharmacist.
a) Personal goals
b) Life Ambitions
2) Why you want to attend that University.
a) What the School means to you.
b) How you will contribute to the University
3) Talk about how you live your life-hobbies, family, etc.
4) Eliminate spelling errors and have someones proofread it for stylistic stuff and make sure that the essay is cogent. If you go on and on the people reading it won’t want to accept you. Be to the point-that is a novelty for college students.
Good Luck,
